Happy National Bike Month!

The month of May is nationally known as “Bike Month.” For all of the avid bike riders out there, bike month is just like any other month. On the other hand, closet weekend riders and newbies are encouraged to pull out their bicycles and proudly peddle to work for National Bike Month. Of course every month is a good month to ride your bike since it’s one of the most eco-friendly modes of transportation.

There are many benefits to riding your bike to work. It’s great for your own personal fitness and it’s certainly better for the environment. Let’s look into just a few of them:

  1. Health and Fitness: Cycling to work is a great form of cardiovascular exercise. While thousands of motorists are sitting in traffic, not burning calories, you will be burning calories, improving your endurance and building up strength as you peddle right past them.
  2. Reduce Stress and Tension: Looking for an easy and fun way to reduce everyday stress?  Take a cruise down the street on your bike. Being outdoors, the fresh air alone will help calm and relax you. It will kick start your morning and energize your mind and body for the day.
  3. Go Green:  Riding a bike to work will not only save you ‘green’ but it will save the greenery around you. Biking is one of the most environmentally-friendly forms of transportation. When riding there are no fumes emissions, and when you compare bike manufacturing to car manufacturing the emissions from bikes are much less.  Plus in this day of ridiculously expensive gas, why wouldn’t you want to save!

Sadly, the majority of Americans could care less about it being bike month. However in one small Northern California town this is not the case. In Davis it’s abnormal to not have a bike. There are more bikes in Davis than there are cars. Nearly 1/5 of all trips in town are taken by bike.  In a town where bicycles are more abundant than people, you will seem like the odd man out if you don’t own a bike. Davis' topography is almost completely flat and has a widespread network of bike paths.

One of the goals of the City of Davis is to create and maintain an integrated system of bikeways. City officials recognize the need to encourage bicycle travel for both transportation & recreation and works to promote bicycle use as a viable, attractive, non-polluting form of transportation that assures safe and convenient access to all areas of the city.
